Maasstraat Antwerp
The challenge
For the construction project on Maasstraat in Antwerp, ABHR needed a reliable and emission-free power supply for a Terex construction crane and various electrical site consumers.
The available grid connection provided insufficient power to handle the crane's peak loads, which would normally lead to the use of a diesel generator.
But in an urban environment like Antwerp, with strict noise and emission standards, that was not an option.
Moreover, the consumption fluctuated greatly due to the hoisting profile of the crane :
short peaks during use, followed by longer rest periods. This created inefficient grid use, high peak tariffs and unnecessary energy loss.
The goal
ABHR wanted a solution that:
- Smoothing the peak power (peak shaving),
- smart can charge based on current electricity prices (dynamic charging),
- energy can cycle in conjunction with a generator in off-grid applications,
- and guarantees completely emission-free operation.
In addition, the technology had to be user-friendly and intuitive for site personnel:
no complex settings, just plug and play in any situation.
The solution
Neargrid supplied the Compact Battery (45 kVA - 60 kWh, 1C), a modular battery unit that is the first step toward zero-emission construction sites.
The Compact acts as an intelligent buffer between the grid and consumers. During peak loads, the battery provides additional power,
and during moments of rest, it automatically recharges through the grid, spreading consumption and reducing energy bills.
The unit features three outlets (125A, 63A, 32A) for flexible connection of consumers.
The dynamic charging function matches charging to current electricity prices, resulting in a tangible reduction in energy bills.
Ease of use is key:
- The green LED at the top is visible from afar and shows the status at a glance.
- Behind the green plexiglass, the state of the safeguards is clearly visible.
- Operation is completely intuitive : no training required, just plug and play.
In addition, the Compact Battery allows peak shaving on construction sites with smaller cranes as well as cycling in combination with a generator at off-grid locations.
The result
ABHR's Maas Street construction site illustrates how even compact projects with the right technology can evolve into zero-emission works with dynamic pricing, intuitive operation and maximum efficiency in one compact solution.
